(Micro) Update 67 Released on Steam

Subnautica

Update 67 is now available on Steam. We haven’t named this update, because it is a little baby update. Unlike Farming, Power Nap, Machinery, and other updates, 67 doesn’t include any big exciting new features. It does include important and useful improvements to the game. Read on to find out what’s inside.

This is a Steam update. To be notified when Subnautica on Xbox One receives its first update, sign up to the Subnautica Xbox newsletter, or follow Subnautica Xbox on Twitter.

Subnautica

Subnautica now supports the use of Xbox controllers when playing on PC. You can adjust controller bindings in a new options section in the main menu. Controllers do not yet work in the main menu itself – Sorry about that, we intend to remedy this in future.

Subnautica

Thanks to some optimisation work we’ve done for the Xbox version of Subnautica, the game will now run slightly better on minimum-specification PCs. If you are running Subnautica on PC at or near minimum-specification, you may notice slightly better frame-rates.

Subnautica

We’ve applied a blowtorch to the loading screen. It will now crash far less often on Windows. The ‘grey screen’ crash, where the Subnautica would become non-responsive and crash, was one of our most frustrating bugs. After this update, we expect you will see it a lot less often.

Also included in Update 67 are:

  • Drowning in Hardcore mode will not longer cause an endless black screen
  • Seamoth and player turn speeds are now more consistent
  • FPS command now available in console
  • VR Bugs have been squashed – you can now make a climb & use Mobile Vehicle Bay properly
  • Locked but known technologies (e.g. Seamoth in Constructor) will display grey icons in fabrication menus

And that’s it for Update 67. To be notified when a new major update is available on Steam, sign up to the Steam update newsletter. We’re looking forward to bringing you the next big Subnautica update!

20151214_SN_Wrecked_3

Hi everyone! This post concerns Xbox Subnautica players. If you are playing on Steam, you can disregard it.

Right now, we are going through the process of releasing the first Subnautica update on Xbox One. We have finished a ‘build’ (a version of the game), and it’s been accepted by Microsoft for deployment to your console. We’ve hit the go-button. Theoretically, the update could be available to download on your Xbox right now.

We have hit two speed-bumps. First, we’re not sure how fast the update is being deployed across Microsoft’s global server network. Some people in some regions are reporting that they can play it, but the deployment does not appear to be widespread. We’re monitoring the situation and will continue to communicate with Microsoft about getting the update to you as quickly as possible.

Second, there may be an issue in the update with saving and loading games. We’re getting reports from some people that everything is ok, and others that it is not. We are making preparations to fix the issue and deploy that fix as soon as possible, but we are not sure what the time-frames will be. It could be today, it could be Monday, it could be later.

Once we have confirmed that the update is globally deployed, and once we’re sure we have the potential saving/loading issue under control, we will properly “announce” that the update has been released. We’ve got YouTube videos, newsletters, a dedicated website and more ready to go. We hope you’ll help us spread the word when the time comes.

Unknown Worlds has, until now, been a PC focused developer. Xbox is new territory for us. This first update is very much a learning experience, and no doubt we’ll get better at releasing updates on Xbox in time. Thank you for being a part of Subnautica Preview. We’re very much enjoying building this game for you, we’re listening to your feedback, and we’re working as fast as we can to get you the best updates possible.

Hi everyone! We hope you’re having a blast in the PRAWN Update. Be sure to visit the PRAWN Update site to see what’s inside. What follows is a less exciting, more granular look at PRAWN’s contents.

Beyond the headline features, PRAWN includes a plethora of smaller changes. Some of these changes fix (or attempt to fix) bugs, others change balance, or tweak the way the story unfolds.

While many of these changes are directly applicable to PRAWN, some of them will be fixing or changing things introduced during PRAWN’s development. So they are not all relevant, but we have done our best to strip this list to only include changes made since the last major update.

A new Subnautica update is available on Steam! The massive Sea Dragon Leviathan and terrifying Warper are now prowling the depths. There’s a third abandoned sea-base to investigate, a new Reinforced Dive Suit to wear, a gorgeous Tree Cove environment to explore, and more: Check out the Dangerous Creatures update site to see all the update goodness.

You’re already familiar with other Leviathan-class creatures, but Sea Dragon is a special beast. Our recommendation when dealing with these massive beasts is to avoid them at all costs.

Adding to the list of mysteries is the Warper. It disappears as quickly as it appears and it with it come a unique set of problems.

The Lost River zone grows with the Tree Cove, which features a mesmerizing, massive tree with the new peaceful Ghost Ray gliding around it.

The third and final abandoned base makes it’s appearance in this update.

The new inhabitants of this base, Crabsquids, now administer a nasty EMP wave when agitated.

Is it hot in here or is that just us? The temperatures in Subnautica rise this update. Unprepared explorers will now experience damage if found in areas that are dangerously hot. We recommend the new Reinforced Dive suit!

Kyanite joins the growing list of resources. Used in crafting the PRAWN Suit Jump Jet Upgrade and the Thermal Reactor.

Last (but not least), the walk/sprint animations get a polish, the build menu gets reorganized, and the main menu get’s a fancy new 3D logo!

Schedule for Xbox Bones Update

Subnautica Xbox One

Short Version:

Very high chance of release between 2nd & 6th of January.

Proper Version:

Hi everyone! We’ve been working to release the Bones Update Xbox for quite some time now. Charlie recently posted this explanation on the forums:

“Getting the XB1 version of Subnautica running as well as the PC version has been a HUGE amount of work. We vastly underestimated it. Max and Jonas have been working on it pretty much full-time for months and there’s still a lot to do. Jonas just did finished a big rewrite of a system that, although it won’t improve performance much right now, was necessary in order for us to make more improvements later.

We now have a ‘build’ (A version of the game) that we’re confident is ready for release. Given it is holiday season, the earliest we can hope to release the update is in the week of the 2nd of January. We would like release day to be the 3rd.

As usual, we can’t promise and nothing in game development is a sure bet. However, this is the most confident we’ve yet been that we’re ready to release Bones on Xbox One.

To receive an email notification the moment the update is released, sign up to the Xbox One Newsletter mailing list.

A note on performance

We aren’t happy with the performance of Subnautica on Xbox One, and we know it does not meet your expectations. The Bones Update does not yet lift Subnautica’s performance to an acceptable level, and we are continuing to devote maximum effort to improving frame rates.

Castles & Coffee Update Released on Steam

$

A new Subnautica Early Access Update has been released! Prepare to dodge burning hot magma…

Lava Castle Precursor Base

A secret lies hidden deep within the bowels of the Lava Castle: A Precursor Base. Great peril awaits any diver attempting to explore this mysterious structure. A Sea Dragon Leviathan guards the entrance, Stalkers prowl the narrow lava passageways, while immense heat and pressure threaten near certain death.

1

If you can make it inside, treasures and secrets await.

Ion Power

The ocean is vast, and often inhospitable. Your survival depends on maintaining a steady supply of power to your equipment and vehicles.

4

New “Ion” batteries and power cells are much longer lasting than existing power sources. Their extended run times allow you to conduct more exploration work between charges.

Coffee Machines

Occasionally we add a feature to Subnautica that really matters. A feature of great consequence. The coffee machine is one of those features.

9

Find the coffee machine amongst the wreckage of the Aurora, place it in your base, and bask in the glory of having achieved greatness.

Gravsphere

The Gravsphere pulls in everything around it. Deploy a Gravsphere to draw in predators, prey and loot.

2

We’ve been experimenting with prototypes of the Gravsphere for some time. The Castle’s and Coffee Update brings the Graveshere’s proper model and animations.

Luggage Bags

The luggage bag acts as portable storage. Pick it up, put it down, and store items in it.

7

Like the coffee machine, the luggage bag may be found in the wreckage of the Aurora.

Working Trash Cans

Alright, stick with us for a moment. This is important. Trash cans actually work.

3

Say goodbye to inventory clutter: Trash cans mean you can throw stuff away. It’s not exactly environmentally friendly, and we don’t know where the stuff goes, but this is the future so don’t worry too much about it.

Air Bladder

The Air Bladder now has a proper model and animations. Use the Air Bladder to rapidly ascend to the surface. Useful in sticky situations where you need to get to get up from the depths, fast!

6

Skip Time

You can now advance time by sleeping.

8

Find the night time too spooky? Hit the hay when the sun sets and you will wake up to the sun shining through your sea-base windows.

Other Little Things

  • Halved Seaglide light energy cost
  • Quartered Seaglide active energy cost
  • Removed frame-rate dependence problem with Seaglide energy usage
  • Removed Kyanite from Blood Kelp (only drillable now)
  • Added Kynanite to recipe for 3rd stage of the rocket (resource sink)

Two Updates in One

On Xbox Performance

$
0
0

Today we’ve released two updates on Xbox One: Precursor and Castles & Coffee. Both bring bundles of new content to Subnautica. Both take steps towards improving performance to acceptable levels. Performance on Xbox One is still not good enough. We know it, and we appreciate you continuing to give us feedback on this point.

There will not ever be a single update that lifts performance to an acceptable level. The road to good frame-rates is, and will continue to be, a gradual one. Each step building on the last, each step leading to the next.

Precursor and Castles & Coffee don’t bring good performance on their own. They do make progress towards that end goal. Our next updates will continue to bring gradually improving performance.

Jonas, Max, Mario and others continue to devote themselves to raising frame rates, reducing hitches, and generally lifting performance to the level you, and the game, deserve. Thank you for playing Subnautica during development. Your feedback, including that about performance, is invaluable, and we are very grateful for your support.

Subnautica Xbox Save/Load Issues

$

Hi everyone! Playing Subnautica on Xbox One? Experienced problems saving and loading the game? We’re very sorry this is happening, and we want you to know that we’re working on fixing the problem right now.

Once we have identified the cause, and repaired the relevant code, we will release an update on Xbox One. We can’t give an estimated time for the release, but this is absolutely our top priority and we will update as soon as possible.

Unfortunately, this kind of bug is part of the ‘Preview Program’ experience: The game is not finished, and while we endeavour to make these development versions reliable, some times they are going to blow up.

That doesn’t make the problem acceptable. Looking to the future: rock-solid, reliable saving and loading is crucial and non-negotiable. We very much appreciate your feedback as we work on making it reliable.

Stay tuned to @subnauticaxbox on Twitter and sign up to the Xbox Development Mailing List to be notified about update releases.

Good news! The Infected Update has been released on Xbox One. We were able to follow the Steam release much more rapidly this time. We won’t always be able to do that, but we will try to keep it up!

Check out the Infected Update site to see all the goodies included in the Infected Update.

With regards to performance and save/load issues: The Infected Update is not a silver bullet that brings great FPS and reliable save/load. Performance is an ongoing effort, and we are still researching the save/load issue in an effort to full resolve it. Here are two posts talking about these topics:

Update 06-Apr-2017: We have identified the issue and worked out how to resolve it. An update is being prepared for release.

Original post 29 Mar 2017:

Hi everyone! We just released a tiny update for Subnautica on Xbox One. This update contains no new content, bug fixes, or improvements of any kind. Its sole purpose is to introduce new tools to help us find and fix the save/load bugs many of you have been experiencing. For example, if you do encounter a save/load issue, you will probably now receive a much more informative error message.

We wish we could have released an update with content instead, but never fear, we are continuing to work on new content behind the scenes. Stay tuned to @SubnauticaXbox on Twitter, and sign up to the Subnautica Xbox Mailing List to be notified as soon as the next update is released.
